Bhubaneswar, Nov. 29: International educational institutes are targeting schools and colleges in the city to motivate students to pursue their higher education abroad.

The process this year started with the British Council’s annual education seminar titled the Great UK Education Seminars that began last week. The programme will continue till December 4.

Launched in February 2012, it is a strategic international marketing programme designed to promote education in the United Kingdom to students worldwide.

This year, the seminars will be hosted in the ODM Public School, Sai International School, DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, KIIT University and C.V. Raman Engineering College in the city.

“The event will provide a chance to students to meet representatives of the British Council and know about the scholarship programmes available for the students in India. The council has the largest-ever scholarship programme for India with over 750 scholarships awarded in the past two years,” said a senior official from the council.

As many as 401 part-scholarship awards are available this year worth 1.5 million pounds (approx Rs 150 million) for varied subject areas ranging from engineering, law and business to art and design, bio-sciences across 57 UK institutes in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, he said.

Chairman of Sai International School Bijoy Sahoo said: “The seminars of this kind will enable students to receive information about studying and living abroad. The students interacted with the representatives from various countries and learnt about their areas of interest.”

The UK gets around 24,000 students from India every year and the number of Indian students applying for undergraduate courses abroad continues to grow.
