CHENNAI: Business visas to United Kingdom from India have risen by 12 per cent in the past one year, a top British Deputy High Commission official said here today. "There is a 12 per cent increase in business visas from India to the United Kingdom," Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy High Commission, Bharat Joshi said. The increase is for the October 2013-September 2014 period, he added. For the same period there was a "general dip" in other cateogory visas, including those for students. "Ninety one per cent of applications seeking visas are approved and the rest are not, for various reasons, including lack of requisite documentation," he said. Committing fraud in seeking visa constitutes only a "small percentage" and such persons face a 10-year ban from going to UK, he noted. On India-UK trade, he said "in both directions" the trade including goods and services was to the tune of 15.6 billion Pounds and hoped that from the new year there will be "good growth" over and above what was being witnessed now. "I am a fan of Joint Ventures and partnerships are always sustainable," he said, adding renewable energy including solar held a huge potential for India-UK ties. "States of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat have a huge potential in terms of new energy." Joshi announced that Lyca, a British telecom company would foray into medical diagnostic services and would open its centre here by June next year. He said educational scholarships provided by UK based universities and institutions for Indian students has risen to 1.5 million pounds during 2014-15 from 1 million pounds during 2013-14. The scholarships are for those who aspire to pursue undergraduate and post graduate courses in the United Kingdom, he added. http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2014-12-17/news/57154823_1_business-visas-india-uk-trade-bharat-joshi
