Urging Indian students to choose the United Kingdom (UK) as a study destination, British high commission's minister counsellor (political and press) Andrew Soper on Wednesday said the UK enjoys global reputation for excellence in the field of education and skills. He said four of the world's top six universities are in the UK and degree from a UK university is highly valued by employers across the globe. Talking to media persons on the eve of inauguration of 'Great UK Education' seminars in the state capital here, Soper said this year British Council, in partnership with 57 UK universities, is offering a total of 401 scholarship awards worth 1.5 million pound (approx. Rs15.10 crore) to attract more Indian students. "...the Great Britain Scholarships-India is the largest-ever scholarship programme offered to Indian students," he said. "In addition, the UK government will quadruple its funding for the Chevening scholarships for Indian students (up to 2.4 million pound) over the next two years, making India the largest recipient in the world. Chevening scholarships are the UK government's global scholarship programme," Soper said. He pointed out that the UK universities offer a vibrant and stimulating environment to international students. "The fact that 84 per cent of Indian student visa applicants in 2013 were successful shows we welcome Indian students in our universities. There is no limit on the number of Indians who can go to study in UK and stay on to work in a graduate-level job after their studies," he said. Soper, who worked as a social science teacher at a Mussoorie-based school during 1983-84, added, "As per a national student survey, over 90% of postgraduate students in UK rate the quality of teaching positively and the satisfaction rate for students has hit a 10-year high - with 86% saying they are satisfied overall with their courses," he said. "Besides, a recent British Council research has found that of 195 countries, one in seven current world leaders have studied in the UK at higher education level. This is a fine example of how investing in UK's higher education sector is a long-term asset internationally," Soper said.
