New Zealand Immigration

Earlier, the crème de la crème of New Zealand used to leave their homeland and head to Australia for better prospects.

Interestingly, now many Australians are said to be relocating to New Zealand as the latter offers economical housing options, shorter commute times and a quality of life which is relatively much better than the one offered by the larger country.

In the first six months of this year, 5,413 people moved from Australia to the neighbouring country – a substantial increase from 1,101 in 2006.

Meanwhile, Statistics New Zealand had also revealed in July that the total number of immigrants entering New Zealand on a long-term basis from January to June 2016 from all over the globe reached 69,100, which is the highest ever for that nation.

Stuff.co.nz quotes Craig Lowe, Lowe & Co Realty Managing Director, as saying that people could get a house in New Zealand within a 15-minute drive from the city for NZ$650,000, which is in many cases less than 50 percent of what it would cost in Sydney.

In addition, food, the hills and a quality lifestyle, with attractions such as diving, mountain biking and beaches are not accessible from the centres of all the main cities of New Zealand.

Gareth Kiernan, an economist with Infometrics, was of the view the migration was owing to the fact that the New Zealand’s economy and labour market were performing better than those of Australia. Kiernan expects migration to New Zealand to remain strong for quite some time.
