Big Study Overseas alert: 800 Scholarships offered by DHTE

The Maharashtra State government has launched Study Overseas Scholarships for students in the Open Category. This is for the first time in the history of the State government. 20 Study Overseas Scholarships for each stream will be offered by the DHTE - Directorate of Higher and Technical Education. This will be for 40 diverse professional courses. These include Pharmacy, Law, Commerce, Arts, Science, Management, Architecture, and Engineering.

One slot each has been allocated for Doctoral and PG programs for each stream. The only exception is Architecture/Engineering. This stream has been allocated 4 slots each.

The Universities for which the scholarships will be approved must be in THE top 200 (Times Higher Education). They can alternatively also be those present the QS ranking list (Quacquarelli Symonds). The yearly family income of the applicants needs to be less than 20 lakh, as quoted by the Times of India.

The seats, income criteria and university rankings are higher for categories that are reserved. 75 scholarships have been allocated to students in the SC community. There is no income ceiling if the universities chosen by the applicants are within top THE 100 rankings.

20 Study Overseas Scholarships are being offered under the OBC category. The income ceiling is Rs 8 lakh. The overseas universities that are being applied for must also be within THE 200 rankings.

The approval for the Open category was announced by the Resolution of the Government dated 4 October. This proposal was cleared by the Cabinet on 21 August. This was following the Maratha reservation agitation.

20 crores have been allocated by the Maharashtra Government for this purpose. There is also a provision for enhancing the allocation to 80 crores phase wise.

The Study Overseas Scholarships will cover complete tuition fee, and stipend according to the rate determined by the DHTE. It will also cover expenses towards economy class return airfare and health insurance.
