Canada has launched an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) entry requirement for foreigners, who are visa exempt, flying to or transiting via its shores.

The Canadian Embassy released a press statement recently advising foreigners who want an eTA to fly or transit through their country to only use the official Government of Canada website (www.canada.ca/eTA) to get this document. An eTA costs C$7.

The news.com.pk quotes the statement as saying that from the time the Canadian government started gradually introducing the eTA requirement for visa-exempt foreigners on 1 August, 2015, many companies have launched websites and are charging additional fees for providing information and submitting eTA applications for the benefit of travellers. The government of Canada has warned the public that these companies were fraudulent and were not representing the Canadian government.

Individuals flying to Canada with an Indian passport need to have a valid visa stamped on their passport.

According to the Government of Canada website, there is, however, a leniency period until 29 September, 2016, during which you can board a flight without an eTA, if you are carrying relevant travel documents such as a valid passport. Border services officers may let you enter Canada as long as you meet the other prerequisites to enter the North American country during this leniency period.
