Germany is a great choice for expats looking for lucrative jobs overseas. If appropriately meeting the eligibility requirements, non-EU nationals are a much sought-after potential labor force in Germany.

Migrants, that too, high-skilled migrants, are in great demand in Germany. While there is a requirement for professionals in various fields, the occupations that have the highest demand in Germany include the fields of research, healthcare, IT, engineering etc.

Thinking of moving to Germany for work overseas in 2021? Let us see here as to how you can get a work permit in Germany in 2021.

What is the difference between a work permit and a work visa?

Firstly, let us begin by differentiating between a work permit and a work visa.

A visa is a document that is needed by an individual to enter a particular country. A work permit, on the other hand, is an employment letter issued by an employer to an employee that is needed by the employee for gaining entry into the country for taking up employment with the concerned employer.

Visas are issued by the immigration authorities at the immigration office. The immigration official handling the case reserves the right to either allow or deny the person’s entry into the country.

Work permits are issued by national or international companies outsourcing to various other countries for hiring professional or technical staff.

Generally, non-EU nationals require a visa for entering Germany.

Ensure that you carefully explore and assess all the options available before you decide the most appropriate German visa for you. Keep in mind that a short stay visa for Germany cannot be converted into a longer-term visa after it has been granted.

What are the common work permits in Germany?

While in Germany, you can work on either of the following popular permits –

Temporary Residence Permit

Also known as a limited residence permit, a temporary residence permit usually lets you stay in Germany for up to 1 year.

The temporary residence permit can be extended provided you continue to fulfil the requirements, and there is no major change in your situation.

The temporary residence permit is the most commonly applied for a permit by foreign nationals upon arriving in Germany.

The temporary residence permit is the basis on which an expat can submit longer-term visa applications.

Such permits can be granted for – employment, study, and marriage purposes.

Do keep in mind that as the temporary residence permit is usually granted on the basis of a specific purpose, that is, if the temporary residence permit granted to you is for work, you cannot study on it and vice versa.

EU Blue Card:

While similar to the temporary residence permit, the EU Blue Card differs in 2 main areas. While the temporary residence permit is general and is usually issued for 1 year, the EU Blue card targets professionals that are highly skilled and is granted for a longer duration.

To be eligible for EU Blue Card, you must have a higher education degree – a bachelor’s or master’s – and must apply only for roles corresponding with your own field of study.

You are eligible if your college degree is from a recognized university and you are moving to the country on a job that pays the stipulated annual gross salary.

You can get the EU Blue Card if you have graduated from a German university or are a highly qualified student in the area of either mathematics, IT, life sciences or engineering or are a medical professional. Your salary needs to be on par with German workers.

Work visa

Before you come to Germany for work, you must apply for a work and residence permit. For this you must have a job offer from a German employer. You can apply for your work and residence permit at the German embassy or consulate in your country.

Your application must include the following:
  • Job offer letter from the firm in Germany
  • Valid passport
  • Annexure for an employment permit
  • Certificates of academic qualification
  • Certificates of work experience
  • Approval letter from the Federal Employment Agency

If you intend to bring your family to Germany with you, the following conditions apply:

  • Your children must be below 18
  • Your income must be sufficient to support you and your family
  • You must be able to provide housing for your family

Do keep in mind that a high level of proficiency in the German language is also required. To enter Germany, you will have to get a visa from the local German mission that has the requisite jurisdiction for handling your case.

Once in Germany, you will have to apply for a residence permit that will let you remain and work in Germany.
