Why Germany?

  • 10th Happiest country in the world
  • Largest economy in EU
  • 3,000 job seeker visas per year for Indians
  • €1.5 billion allotted for immigrants settlement
  • Eased immigration policies

Germany is the world’s fourth-largest economy and Europe’s major powerhouse. It also has a well-developed education system, a world-class healthcare system, and various job opportunities. All these factors have made Germany one of the top destinations for migrants.

Foreign nationals can migrate to Germany for various reasons, such as work, higher education, reuniting with family, floating a business, and settling down there.

Basic Requirements to Migrate to Germany

There are several pathways to migrate to Germany. Though requirements vary for each of them, they are mostly similar. To qualify to relocate to Germany, you should fulfill the following conditions.

Proof of Monetary Stability

Whatever the purpose of immigration, all applicants who want to go to Germany should show that they have adequate finances to take care of themselves when in that country. Even those who would start working there need to have enough money to cover their expenses until they get their first pay.

Proof of Health Insurance

Before you are able to immigrate to Germany, ensure you have enough health insurance to cover your stay there. It is better to opt for health insurance in Germany since not all overseas health insurance covers may be accepted there.

Have Basic German Proficiency

Though many people in Germany do understand English, basic proficiency in German is recommended. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), there are three levels of proficiency in the German language, such as A, B, and C. If you want to become a permanent resident of Germany, you will need to take the exams and get either a C1 or C2 level. If going just there for work with the intent of returning to your home country, either A1 or B1 is enough.

German Visas

All individuals from outside of the EEA or Switzerland do not require a visa to visit Germany. However, nationals of other countries could apply for a residence permit if they enter Germany without a visa.

Visa Types of Germany

The various visas with which you enter Germany include Business Visa, Study Visa, a Working (Employment) Visa, a Job Seeker Visa, Training/Internship Visa, Guest Scientist Visa, and a Family Reunion Visa if you are uniting with a close relative or spouse/partner.

Immigration for Employment in Germany

Germany is facing a shortage of skilled professionals, such as engineers, healthcare workers, professionals in IT, and skilled workers in other crucial areas. The government of Germany has loosened its immigration rules to welcome skilled overseas workers to arrive on its shores.

One of the most popular means of immigration to Germany is finding a job in the country. The steps to moving to Germany for work are the following, such as securing a job in Germany, applying for a Germany Work Visa, relocating to Germany, and obtaining a working residence permit.

The German residence permit is granted only if the employer and skilled worker need to prove that there is no appropriate employee from Germany or the EU to fill that job opening and that the skilled worker will have similar conditions as any other German employee in terms of a salary earned and the working conditions, the employee fulfills all educational qualifications and work experience required for the job position, and the firm that hires fulfills all the requirements that German government requires.

As a German worker, you will be allowed to as long as your residence permit is valid. In case your employer wants you to continue working when your work permit is nearing its expiry date, you can then apply for an extension, and in certain cases, even for permanent residence.

Immigration to Germany for Education

As many German educational institutions offer free education, many students apply to study in Germany. The teaching facilities, as well as the physical infrastructure at the German institutions, are world-class.

If you get a study visa to Germany, you can remain in that country for a brief time after completing your search for a job. According to reports, more than half of students who have completed a degree in Germany managed to find a job there.

Immigration to Germany for Entrepreneurship

If you want to invest in Germany, the country encourages foreign nationals to set up their establishments on its shores. But you need to invest at least €250,000. Those who do so will receive a Self-Employment Visa, which is on par with a German Working Visa. The eligibility criteria for this Visa are as follows:

  • Proof that your business will contribute to the German economy
  • The business you set up should be in demand in Germany

If your business succeeds in Germany, you will be allowed to extend your residence permit after three years for an unlimited time. During this time, you can enter and exit Germany multiple times.

Immigration to Germany for Family Reunions

Certain people who have moved to Germany for study or work can bring their spouses or partners and dependent children aged fewer than 16.

Spouses who enter Germany on family reunion visas should show their marriage certificates, while children should show birth certificates. Children over 16 must show proof of basic German language proficiency, while spouses or partners should have German proficiency of A1 level to qualify.

Residence Permits in Germany

Two types of residence permits, temporary and permanent, are issued by German authorities. While temporary residence permits allow foreigners to stay in Germany for a stipulated period, permanent residence permits allow them to stay in Germany as long as they want.

Standard Residence Permit

This residence permit is issued for all the immigration intents mentioned above and also for such purposes as taking training courses. The standard residence permit is effective only for a specific period.

European Union (EU) Blue Card

German EU Blue Card is granted to foreign workers who are talented and want to work in Germany. Eligible for it are those who have a job offer in Germany with a minimum yearly salary of €56,800.

With an EU Blue Card, its holders are allowed to stay for four years in Germany, allowing them to switch over from their residence permit into a permanent settlement. Eligible for permanent settlement are those who have adequate proficiency in the German language, fulfill precise financial requirements, and have work experience of more than 33 months in Germany in their employment place where their skills are required.

Settlement Permit or Permanent Residence Permit

The German permanent residence permit is known as the Settlement Permit, and it is given to those who have possessed a standard residence permit or an EU Blue Card for a minimum of five years and have adequate proficiency in the German language.
