Post study work visas.

Those who migrate to foreign countries using a student visa not only sees the prospect of world-class education and a great campus life but also the opportunity to build a great career abroad.

To work abroad after studies, various countries have different programs which come as greatly advantageous to the international student. Here, let’s see which countries offer a work visa after you complete your study abroad.

A 485 visa allows international students to work temporarily after studies in Australia. The visa comes in 2 streams:

  • Graduate work – Those who are on this visa can, after having graduated recently, employ the skills and qualifications for specific jobs in Australia by staying in the country for up to 18 months.
  • Post-study work: With this visa, international students can graduate from Australia with a degree and can stay back and work for 2 to 4 years depending on qualification.

Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows international students to work for up to 3 years in Canada after graduating from any Designated Learning Institution (DLI). The student must hold a valid temporary visa status if not have left the country after the expiry of one.

If the student has previously been issued a post-graduation work permit, or have been funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), such student is ineligible for PGWP.

US issues an Optional Practical Training (OPT) to students in the US with an F-1 visa. These students can only apply for OPT while they are in the US.

OPT is a visa extension that allows international graduates who are eligible to work in the country for not more than a year after finishing their studies. STEM graduates are eligible for an additional 2 years.

This temporary visa allows the students to stay back in the US and look for jobs. They can even find a company to sponsor their employment visa. Though the US President has signed an executive order on June 22, 2020, to suspend temporary visas for the rest of 2020, the OPT program will stay intact.

New Zealand

According to the level of qualification earned by an international student in New Zealand, the country issues post-study work visa for terms of 1, 2, or 3 years. The place where the student qualified is also considered.

The only exceptions of jobs that students can work in include commercial adult services or invest or operate in a business that indulges in one like adult entertainment business.

Those who complete their studies outside Auckland before 2021 ends will be eligible for a work visa for a period of 2 or 3 years.

The UK’s post-study work visa for international students is of a 2-year duration. Considering Brexit, it has lately been demanded to double this period. The visa called the “visa route”, allows one to look for a job in the UK for up to 2 years after graduating.

After the 2 years, the candidate can switch to a skilled work visa if they found a job that meets the skill needed by the route.
