AUSTRALIA Sydney plans to attract ‘best and brightest’ It is part of an initiative by New South Wales, Australia’s biggest state, which wants to quadruple its annual intake of skilled migrants, up to 7,200. It also includes plans to extend post-study work rights for international students. New South Wales (NSW) has historically had a low intake of skilled migrants, considering its population of 7.2 million is about one third of the country’s population. Canada looks to speed entry of skilled foreign workers Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said the government will modify its Federal Skilled Worker Program, which has been skewed towards professionals, to try to attract trades people and other skilled workers that are in short supply in Canada during the current commodities boom.The new system will also increase the role of employers in the immigration system, allowing them to fill vital jobs faster. UK Increased funds required for UK Tier 2 visa applicants from 14 June 2012 The UK Border Agency (UKBA) announced that they will increase the funds required to satisfy the maintenance requirement for Tier 2 visas applicants. The changes go into effect from 14 June 2012. This follows a written ministerial statement from 15 March 2012 that outlines a number of changes to the Immigration Rules, including the closure of the Tier 1 Post Study Work route on 6 April 2012. No Change to the Immigration Cap for Two Years Immigration Minister, Damian Green, has confirmed that the Tier 2 (General) immigration cap will remain at its current level of 20,700 until April 2014.The announcement follows the recommendation made by the Migration Advisory Committee in February that no change should be made.
