Overseas Students in Ireland

Overseas Students in Ireland have been asked to be cautious of accommodation scams. An awareness campaign titled ‘Scam Watch’ has been launched with this purpose. It aims at avoiding overseas students from being victimized by the accommodation scams.

The Government of Ireland has planned to offer 7,000 extra student beds by the year 2019. The accommodation providers in the private sector have also responded to this challenge. They have also enhanced the pricing meanwhile, as quoted by the Study International.

Overseas students in Ireland who do not fit into the affluent bracket are open to exploitation. They are often forced to opt for options at a low cost to have a shelter when they arrive in Ireland. But these are always not available according to President of the Union of Students in Ireland Síona Cahill.

The ‘Scam Watch’ campaign offers diverse advice to Overseas Students in Ireland that include:

  • Not agreeing to rent a property without viewing it adequately and ensure that you are happy with the conditions and terms of the letting
  • Avoid cash payment and always seeking a correct receipt
  • Verifying the position of the person claiming to be the agent or landlord before opting for any Electronic Fund Transfer services
  • Verify the general rent rates in the locality and be cautious if the rent appears to be a bargain
  • Check the Residential Tenancies Board website for the Register of Landlords to verify the existence of the property
  • Ensure that you possess the correct contact details of the agent or landlord and that the keys work
  • Meet the landlord to finalize the terms of the tenancy before signing any document for rental agreement
