Six Indian-Americans nominated for the highest civilian honor for immigrants in the US

Six Indian-Americans including author Fareed Zakaria, PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi have been selected for the highest civilian honor for Immigrants in the US for the year 2017 - Ellis Island Medal of Honor.

Totally 88 individuals have been selected for this award and the four other Indians include Mohan H Patel, Yashvant Patel, Dr. Annapoorna S Kini, and CEO Chairman of Harman International Industries Dinesh Paliwal.

Indra Nooyi has been the CEO of PepsiCo 2006 onwards and its Chairman 2007 onwards.

Ms. Nooyi was earlier the CFO and President of PepsiCo and also the Senior Vice-President of Development and Corporate Strategy.

Zakaria is a columnist for the Washington Post and also the CNN’s host for ‘Fareed Zakaria GPS’. He has also been the Editor-at-large of Time, editor at Newsweek International and columnist at Newsweek.

Paliwal became the Chairman at Harman in 2008 before serving as the CEO President in 2007.

Founded by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, The Ellis Island Medal of Honor are given every year to individuals who offer commendable service in their respective fields and their accomplishments are valuable to the nation, quotes Times of India.

Both the houses of the US Congress have recognized these awards as one among the prestigious awards in the US ever since their inception in 1986.

National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations has given these awards to diverse and distinguished Americans that include six Presidents of America, Hillary Clinton, the Former Secretary of State, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, Muhammad Ali, Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, Lee Iacocca, Rosa Parks, and Louis Zamperini.

The awardees of the 2017 honors will be given the awards on Ellis Island in New York on May 13.
