The IELTS exam or the International English Language Testing System is designed to test the English language proficiency of non- native speakers. They will need to obtain a specific score if they want to work or study in a country where English is the main language of communication.

If you intend to study or work abroad, you will have to give the IELTS exam. But are you aware of the eligibility requirements are IELTS? Do you know the minimum score? What is considered a good score? How much do you know or not know? Here are some answers to some common queries on the IELTS exam.

The IELTS exam can be taken by anyone over the age of 16.

2. Is the IELTS only for those who want to study abroad?

No, this test is required if you want to work or migrate to Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

3. What is the minimum educational qualification to take the test?

Anyone who has a high school certification can give the IELTS exam

4. How many formats are there in IELTS?

There are two formats of the IELTS exam:

IELTS General training test

This test is primarily for professionals and migrants aspiring to permanently settle in an English-speaking country.

5. Does the IELTS have a passing score?

There is no passing score in IELTS. The results are reported on a 9-band scale (1 being the lowest, 9 being the highest). The score you need is determined by the requirements of your visa or the institution/ organization to which you are applying. Always remember to check what score you need before you take the test.

If you have taken the IELTS test for immigration, then a good score depends on the country and the visa category that you have applied for.

If you are applying for studying overseas, then you should get a score as per the country and the University that you are applying for.

6. Is the IELTS is a compulsory test?

You need not take the IELTS if the program or the university you want to study does not require it.

The test is not compulsory if the country you want to work in or migrate to does not ask for IELTS scores.
