Changes in the Australian Immigration System

The Australian government has recently made changes to its immigration system. The below table shows the changes made in the point-based system:

Scenario Points
Applicants who do not have a spouse or a partner 10
Applicants with a skilled spouse or partner 10
Applicants who are nominated by a State or Territory government or sponsored by a family member residing in Australia   15
Applicants with STEM qualifications 10
Applicants who have a spouse or partner who has competent English. If this is the case, the spouse or partner need not go through a skill assessment.   5

The government is providing 10 to 15 extra points to candidates applying for regional visas. Also, the regional visa validity has been extended to 5 years from 4 years.

Also, the government introduced two new regional visas last year.

Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa: This came as a replacement to the earlier Subclass 491 visa. As per this visa, 14,000 places every year will be allocated and this is mainly a skilled migration visa.

Eligibility for Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa:

  • Less than 45 years
  • Positive skill assessment
  • Nomination by the state government
  • Sponsored by any family member settled in that designated region

Benefits of this visa:

  • Application to undergo priority processing
  • 500 eligible occupational opportunity, whereas the occupational opportunity in the non-regional areas is 430

Subclass 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored: This visa came up as a replacement for the RSMS visa. As per this visa, 9,000 regional places are allocated each year.

Eligibility for Subclass 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored visa:

  • Undertaking skills assessment
  • At least three years of work experience
  • Applicant’s age must be less than 45 years

Benefits of this visa:

  • Application to undergo priority processing
  • 700 eligible occupational opportunity, whereas the occupational opportunity in the non-regional areas is 250

After staying in the place for three years, immigrants can apply for a PR visa after moving to a regional area.

These changes give more points to Subclass 491 visa candidates without using non-regional pathways. It also opens up many occupations for PR candidates.

With these changes in the Australian immigration system, there are chances of committing many mistakes while filing for the Australian PR visa.

Below are some of the precautions that you can take while applying for the PR to avoid rejection:

  1. Don’t apply for the wrong visa type: Majorly there are three types of subclass in the Australian PR visa process, namely, Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189, Skilled Regional (Provisional) Subclass 491, and Skilled Nominated Visa Subclass 190. The qualifying criteria for all of these are different. So, the applicants are requested to choose the proper criterion for application.

  2. Don’t violate the conditions of your previous visa: You must keep in mind if you have failed to regard the conditions of your last visa. In this case, try to file through the appropriate category.

  3. Provide complete information in your visa application: You are advised to check the entire application page before submitting it. A lot of times, applicants submit incomplete or inconsistent information. Your visa may get rejected when the authorities verify it.

  4. Try to meet the health requirements: Australian PR visa might get rejected if the applicant is suffers from severe illness such as mental health issues, HIV, primary heart conditions, cancer, etc. Try to get yourself checked thoroughly before getting into this entire process of application.

  5. Meet the character requirements: Australia is immensely strict about letting criminals enter the country. Therefore, you must not hold a criminal record associated with any criminal organization and should not have a history of harassing other people.

  6. Don’t undermine the English proficiency test: One will have to score well in IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE, as this will increase your chances of getting the Australian PR visa. The higher the score, the more points you get in the points grid system.

You can prepare for IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE with the coaching provided by Y-Axis.

  1. Attain financial stability: Applying candidates will be asked to present financial status proof to the visa filing authorities. This will ensure you are financially stable enough to enter and live in the country.

  2. Try following the visa verification process: The Australian immigration system is stringent, and you must be very careful while filing for the visa. The applicants are requested not to share any false information, or they will be barred from entering Australia for several years.

Steps to follow if your application is rejected
