UK Home Office endangering nation’s international research reputation says Jeremy Corbyn

The UK Home Office is endangering the nation’s international research reputation, said Jeremy Corbyn. He accused that the Home Office is denying visas to overseas academics who are married to UK nationals.

Frequent overseas travel must be undertaken by academics that are pursuing research abroad. On the other hand, the UK home office is utilizing this time spent overseas against the academics. It is denying their settlement visa applications based on this reason.

A US national Jennifer Wexler is married to a UK man. She has resided in the UK for last 11 years. All this time she has either been studying or working with best universities in the UK and museums.

Wexler is an archaeologist with Post Graduate and Doctoral degree from the University College London. She has been working for the past 4 years with the British Museum in London. However, her application for Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK has been denied. Wexler has filed an appeal against this decision.

Jeremy Corbyn has dispatched a letter to the UK Home Office in support of the ILR application of Wexler. It is yet to be answered, as quoted by the Guardian. He said that when it comes to academics, the Home Office is failing repeatedly to exercise discretion in the rules.

Dr. Wexler is an obvious asset to the UK owing to her education and expertise, said Jeremy Corbyn. This is not a singular case, he added. Several academics travel overseas for appropriate conduct of their research. The UK Home Office must be more flexible in these cases, added Corbyn.

A spokesperson of the Home Office refused to comment saying that it would not be appropriate to comment on legal proceedings that are underway.
