What is IELTS for UKVI?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for UKVI (UK visas and immigration) is one of the tests approved by the United Kingdom (UK) government that demonstrates that applicants satisfy their proficiency in the English language as part of an application for the UK Home Office.
Meanwhile, IELTS is an internationally regulated test that evaluates the skills in the English language for non-native speakers of the English language. IELTS is accepted to study, work and migrate to various English-speaking countries, including the UK. But IELTS requirements vary from one country to another.
IELTS Life Skills, as well as IELTS for UKVI, are intended to meet specific administrative needs particular to UK Visas and Immigration to obtain a UK visa. UKVI will not accept results of IELTS exams taken in other countries.
Different IELTS types for UKVI exams
In addition to the score you should obtain, the IELTS test taken by you is dependent on the requirements of the Home Office and/or the needs of the educational institutions or organizations where you intend to study or work. When taking an IELTS test for supporting a Home Office application, you must sit for the IELTS Life Skills test or the IELTS for UKVI test.
IELTS for UKVI has two different training components – Academic or General Training – both of which are accepted as evidence of English language proficiency for applicants intending to work, study or reside in the UK.
The different types of IELTS UKVI tests are as follows.
IELTS for UKVI (Academic) – this test is used to evaluate if your proficiency in the English language is fit for an academic atmosphere, assessing if you are prepared to commence training or studying. This test is meant for applicants who must prove their English language proficiency to UKVI to pursue education at either bachelor’s or master’s levels, in addition to those looking for professional registration in the UK.
IELTS for UKVI (General Training) – this test evaluates proficiency in the English language in daily real-world circumstances, where the assignments and tests demonstrate circumstances at workplaces and outside of work. This is meant for applicants who have to prove their English language proficiency to UKVI to study or train below the undergraduate level or to migrate to the UK.
IELTS Life Skills are of three types: A1, A2, and B1. The Al level is meant for those who should prove their English language proficiency as their application’s part to UKVI to apply for a visa as a family member of a UK citizen, while the A2 level is for those intending to extend their partner or parent visas. The B1 test is meant for those who intend to apply for either indefinite leave to remain (ILT) or UK citizenship.
People needing to apply for the IELTS for UKVI tests
Proficiency in the English language is the necessary CEFR level for most applicants for UK immigration.
Mentioned below are the different IELTS tests applicants should take and the scores they require for different types of UK visas, based on the mandatory minimum Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level and aptitude required for those specific types of visas.
A Skilled Worker visa needs CEFR level B1 which includes reading, speaking, writing, and listening, in which candidates need to score an aggregate of 4.0 and for each of the four skills in the IELTS for the UKVI exam.
Those applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or UK citizenship will have to take CEFR level B1, for which they must pass at B1 the IELTS Life Skills or get a score of 4.0 in listening and speaking in the IELTS for the UKVI exam.
Family members of UK citizens will need to take CEFR level A1, for which they must pass at A1 the IELTS Life Skills or get a score of 4.0 in listening and speaking in the IELTS for the UKVI exam.
Visa extensions of families of settled persons must take CEFR level A2, for which they would have to pass at A2 the IELTS Life Skills or get in the IELTS for UKVI test 4.0 score in speaking and listening.
If you want to pursue education at an undergraduate level or above at a Higher Education Institution (HEI), you need not pass a secure English language test (SELT). The HEI has its own means to evaluate your English language ability.
If you want to pursue a course below the undergraduate level, irrespective of the kind of educational institution, you need to pass a SELT test to meet proficiency in the English language. IELTS Academic results are accepted by all universities and colleges in the UK, implying that you need not take an IELTS for UKVI (Academic) exam but can submit a result in the IELTS Academic instead.
