The GRE test helps to assess the potential of the applicant for advanced study. The GRE exam score is used by graduate schools in different countries to select applicants. Students applying to these universities must submit their GRE scores with their application.

It is important that you start early in your preparation for your GRE exam. Even though the GRE exam is conducted multiple times in a year, there are certain limits to the number of attempts you can make in a calendar year. There must be a minimum gap of 21 days between two tests. Apart from this, you are allowed only 5 attempts in a calendar year.

But it would be wonderful if you can manage to get the optimum score in the GRE exam which is a total score of 315 and AWA score of.4.0. Here are some valuable tips to help you prepare for your GRE exam and get a good score in your first attempt.

Start early

The advantage of starting early with your preparation can never be undermined. Now, theoretically speaking, let us presume you are preparing to apply for the primary intake, which is typically the intake of September / October through various universities. The application usually begins 10-12 months before the intake for most universities and continues until about 4 months before. We, therefore, recommend you write the exams at least 14 months in advance of the beginning date of the session you wish to join.

In other terms, let us suppose you want to try for admission to your university for the September intake of the next year. The admission process for this intake will start somewhere around October this year and go till the month of May of the next year. This is true for the various universities around the world. With such a timeline, you should start preparing for your GRE in July this year. This will give you enough time to appear for the exam and submit your scores along with your application.

If your score wasn't good enough, you'd still have enough time to retake the test and write it to make the deadline by early September the latest!

Now to answer the all-important question ... when to start preparing for your GRE?

In order to study for your GRE exam, we suggest that you give yourself at least a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 4 months. Depending on your learning pace and confidence level with the various parts of the tests, this will be a suitable preparation period.
